natural

The use of natural ingredients in cosmetic products can be confirmed by our seal. Based on the cosmetic-specific ISO standards 16128-1 and -2, we evaluate your formulations. As defined by the guideline, “Natural” are cosmetic ingredients obtained only from plants, animals, microorganisms or minerals. Water is considered natural, too. Ingredients obtained from fossil fuels are excluded from the definition. If at least 100% of the ingredients meet the requirements of the guidelines, the seal can be placed on your product.

Same testing method – new seal design

In a dynamic market, it is important to stay ahead. That’s why we are introducing our innovative “Consumer Line” seals. Through claims and corresponding visual elements, they provide direct information about what has been tested – for your customers, this means instant clarity.

Benefits of the Natural seal

  • Usage of the claim and seal “Natural”
  • Evaluation according to guidelines 16128-1 and -2
  • Objective report by experts as part of the product information file
  • Transparent end consumer communication by means of a testing URL on the seal

We can provide this service to you. To do this, we need the following documents from you:

  • Quantitative composition of the product (formulation)
  • Complete documentation of raw materials (Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Certificate of Analysis (CoA), raw material specifications, information about natural origin)

Please contact us if you have any questions at all about the “Natural” seal.

Your route to the seal of approval in 4 steps

You send us your enquiry. We would be delighted to inform you about our available seals, which can be provided. Depending on the test design we plan the corresponding test methods and define the assessment criteria with you. We develop the most suitable study design for your product based on your preferences, ideas and our requirements.

You confirm the suitable study designs or assessments and send us the required sample quantities and information to go with it. We can then start immediately with the internal risk analysis, specific preparations for the study or assessment, and if necessary the recruitment of test subjects.

We carry out the jointly agreed assessment - perhaps an assessment for using the seal “Natural” - at one of our test sites.

If your product has successfully passedour review stage and assessment, we then send you the assessment report and authorisation to use the appropriate Dermatest® seal. Besides the English version, we would be delighted to provide you with the Dermatest® seal to support sales in the national language of your sales markets as appropriate.

FAQ

“Natural” are cosmetic products made from purely natural raw materials such as plants, fungi and algae, minerals, animal substances and microorganisms.

No, the products can also contain natural ingredients made from animals such as honey, bee wax or milk.
In general mineral oil-based raw materials are not prohibited in the products, but they do not count as natural ingredients.
Based on the raw material specification of the certificates of analysis, the quality and composition of the raw materials is checked with a further focus on the use of ingredients of natural origin.
No, the seal guarantees the naturalness of the product, it does not guarantee the climate friendliness.

For the “Natural” label, 95% of the ingredients must be of natural origin. For the “Natural origin” label, 95% of the substances must meet these requirements to at least 50%.

Nanomaterials of natural origin are permitted. If they are not of natural origin, they do not count as natural raw materials.
Nanomaterials are materials whose individual units are between one and one hundred nanometres. They can occur naturally, be by-products of combustion reactions or be produced specifically by technology to fulfil a special function. Due to their small size, nanomaterials can have different physical or chemical properties than larger particles of the same material.
Because palm oil is one of the natural ingredients, it is permitted as an ingredient for certification.
Microplastics are present as contaminants in many food and cosmetic products. Since Dermatest does not test for contaminants but for ingredients, contaminants such as microplastics may be present despite the seal.

The “Natural” seal from Dermatest is an independent and objective seal that tests and guarantees the requirements for natural ingredients as defined by ISO 16128-1 and -2.

Yes, all products with a Dermatest seal are free from animal testing.
ISO 16128-1 and -2 describes a standard that sets an international standard in natural cosmetics. It increases transparency for manufacturers of cosmetic products. A distinction is made between natural, derived natural and organic ingredients.
The packaging material must comply with the requirements of the EU Regulation for Consumer Goods, Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 in conjunction with Regulation (EU) 10/2011 (migration of polymer additives) as well as Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 (Good Manufacturing Practice for Food Contact Materials).
The ingredients are tested by food chemists, dermatologists, allergists and/or biologists.
They are permitted, but do not count as natural ingredients.
Genetically modified plants are plants in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that would not be possible naturally through crossing and/or natural recombination. Through genetic modification plants produce for example particularly high amounts of a certain ingredient or they are pesticide-resistant.
Yes, plant-based raw materials of genetically modified plants are permitted, as these also count as natural ingredients.
Dermatest is certified to ISO 9001 by TÜV Rheinland.
No, these seals test for naturalness and not for the farming methods used
Because natural ingredients can also cause allergies, no guarantee of the compatibility of the products can be given despite the seal.
As Dermatest is an independent dermatological institute, all products must meet the “natural ingredients” or “derived natural ingredients” requirements. Greenwashing is therefore not possible.
Greenwashing refers to companies or institutions that present themselves as particularly environmentally aware and environmentally friendly through ecological projects, PR measures, monetary donations or similar activities, without there being any sufficient basis for this.
The brands awarded the seal contribute to the protection of environmental resources and climate protection.
Preservatives are added to products to inhibit growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi or yeasts.
Preservatives of natural origin are permitted. If they are not of natural origin, they do not count as natural raw materials.

The “Natural” seal from Dermatest guarantees that the requirements for a natural product according to ISO 16128-1 or 2 are met.

After all the necessary documents have been received, the assessment according to ISO-16128-1 and -2 is carried out. The focus here is on raw material origin and quality. If the assessment is successful permission to use the seal is granted and a study report issued.

The “natural ingredients” or “derived natural ingredients” labels enhance brand perception and increase the seriousness or authenticity of the product, which can have a positive impact on sales volume.

After very strict and detailed assessments, the certified manufacturers can place the logo with the “Natural” or “Natural origin” seal on the approved products.

We do not set a time limit for the use of the seals. However, if something changes in the composition and recipe of the products, a new test must be carried out. According to EU law, the period during which the test was carried out must be indicated on the product packaging, which is why the test month and the test year are stored in the seal.
